Medway Recreation is partnering with USTA New England to run a pickleball league between Medway & Franklin. This league has two divisions - intermediate and advanced - that will play on Monday nights this summer. Each division will have 4 teams and games will be played against the other teams in the division over the course of a 6 week season. Each week, players will play at least three 15-minute doubles games against the opposing team. All matches will be played at the Medway courts. Each team will have a captain that sets the lineup each week. Players will provide their paddles and USTA will provide the balls, a player gift and captain & champion prizes at the end of the season. Divisions with level descriptions: Intermediate Has a good understanding of the rules Working on getting serves and return of serves deeper Working on getting dinks shallower/lower Capable of hitting a few dinks in a row Can hit a backhand Trying to add more power and/or softness While ratings are not required for this league, this division would be for players with a 3.0-3.5 rating level range for those familiar with USAPA or DUPR ratings Advanced Has a solid understanding of the rules and strategy Anticipates opponents shots Serves are deep, strong and consistent; has a strong backhand Plays aggressively in the non-volley zone; dinks are shallow and low While ratings are not required for this league, this division would be for players with a rating above 3.5 for those familiar with USAPA or DUPR ratings Intermediate Division: Monday nights, July 17th to August 21st, 5:30-7:00 pm (rain date August 28th)Advanced Division:  Monday nights, July 17th to August 21st, 7:00-8:30 pm (rain date August 28th)                                               Fee: $70

8:30 AM - 10:00 AM    Pickleball Learn to Play and Specialty Clinics - Learn to Play Pickleball - Beginner: October 21
Pickleball Pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played both indoors or outdoors on a 44-foot by 20-foot court. Created for all ages and skill levels, pickleballs rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. The Medway Recreation Department offers clinics for beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate players at Medway High School.   Learn to Play: Beginner Clinic - Participants will learn the fundamentals of pickleball: basic strokes, serves, scoring, rules and game strategies. By the end of this clinic, participants will be able to play games on their own. Pickleball equipment, etiquette, and safety will also be covered. Advanced Beginner Clinic - This clinic is for players who have taken the Beginner's Clinic and/or have previously played pickleball and understand the basic rules and fundamental pickleball skills. The focus will be on continued skill development as well as strategies for playing winning pickleball. The clinic will include a mix of drills and game play.   Specialty Clinic: Dinks - This clinic will focus on shots at the non-volley zone (kitchen). Dinking technique and strategy will be taught and practiced through a series of drills. The clinic will end with full games. Specialty Clinic: Third Shots: Drops and Dives - This clinic will focus on one of the most important shots - the third shot. Technique for both drives and drops will be taught and practiced through a series of drills and games Up/Down River Playing Clinic - A playing clinic which provides a competitive game format, Up/Down River is a combination of games with different players and skill development game - all in a fun atmosphere. Participants play games in 12-minute increments. At the end of the game, the winning team on each court moves up, and the other team moves down. Coaching support on skills and game strategy is provided during play and between games. Participants must have either taken a beginner/advanced beginner lesson and/or have pickleball playing experience and know the basic rules/scoring.
